One of the best things about staying in Red Hook is that St. John is just a 20-minute ferry ride away. Here's how to plan the perfect day trip to one of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean.
Getting There
The Red Hook ferry terminal is steps from our IslesAway condos. Ferries run frequently throughout the day, roughly every hour. No car needed — you can explore Cruz Bay on foot or grab a taxi to the beaches. The fare is affordable and the ride offers gorgeous views of the islands.
Trunk Bay
Trunk Bay is St. John's crown jewel — a pristine beach with an underwater snorkel trail through coral reefs. Get there early for the best experience and to secure a good spot. Snorkel gear is available for rent, and the marked underwater trail makes it easy for beginners.
Cruz Bay
The main town on St. John is a charming spot to grab lunch, shop for local art, and soak up the island vibe. There are great restaurants right by the ferry dock. Browse the galleries, pick up some local hot sauce, and enjoy the colorful, walkable streets.
Virgin Islands National Park
Two-thirds of St. John is national park land. Hike the Reef Bay Trail, visit historic sugar mill ruins, or simply enjoy the untouched natural beauty. The park offers guided hikes and programs — check the schedule at the visitor center in Cruz Bay.
Tips for Your Day Trip
Bring sunscreen, water, and cash (some beach vendors don't take cards). The last ferry back to Red Hook is usually around 11 PM, so you can even stay for dinner and enjoy the nightlife in Cruz Bay before heading back.
A day trip to St. John is an absolute must during your IslesAway stay. The combination of world-class beaches, national park hiking, and charming island town makes it one of the best day trips in the entire Caribbean.
